Monthly Meeting Recap

The Board of Education met on Monday, March 9 for its Regular Monthly Meeting at the Robert Procunier Administration Center in Tinley Park.

The meeting started with Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services and CSBO, presenting the Five-Year Financial Forecast. After the presentation, he laid out a financial remedy plan on Behalf of Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick. The financial remedy identifies how the District plans to right-size expenses based on the five-year financial forecast.

The Board heard the following from Mr. Charleston on behalf of Dr. Stawick:
  • The 5 Essentials Survey closes on March 10. The District has been reaching out to families via email, social media, and learning apps to gather feedback. This year, the survey is being managed by Panorama.
  • Parent Teacher Conferences were held on February 12. Overall feedback on the conferences was positive.
  • Board Secretary Amy Hamernick has been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education and Those Who Excel with an Award of Excellence.
  • Board Vice President Rick Lloyd was recently recognized by the Illinois Association of School Boards as an Established Board Leader.
  • Kruse students, staff, and families recently hosted a Read-A-Thon Fundraiser that raised $15,724.00.

The Board also heard the following:
  • Teachers union president Eileen Von Borstel gave an update on the happenings at each of the schools including many reading-focused activities and preparations for IAR testing.
  • ESP union president Karen Lyons reported that contract negotiations have started and it has been a pleasant experience.
  • The contract with Whitsons Nutrition for the District’s breakfast and lunch program is up for renewal. Mr. Charleston presented the Board with the proposed renewal and will ask for approval at the April meeting.

The Board took the following action at the meeting:
  • Approved a list of items to be declared surplus for sale, donation, or disposal.
  • Approved a bid for office and restroom renovations at Central Middle School.
  • Approved a $2.2 million property tax abatement. This is the second abatement in the same amount for the Property Tax Relief Grant (PTRG) the district received in 2025.
  • Approved an optional $1 million abatement of a portion of the 2025 taxes.
  • Approved a Transfer from the Educational Fund to Debt Service Fund.
  • Approved the honorable dismissal of teachers.
  • Approved a resolution to dismiss a tenured teacher.

The minutes of the March meeting will be available on Diligent once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting.

Next Board Meeting

The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, April 13 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Fierke Education Center, 8535 W. Victoria Drive in Oak Forest.

The District has qualified for Illinois’ Property Tax Relief Grant (PTRG) four years in a row. For each grant, the District agrees to abate property taxes for two years in exchange for a permanent increase in annual Evidence Based Funding.

This is the final year of PTRG abatements. In an effort to ease the effects of those abatements ending, the Board of Education approved an additional $1 million abatement.
